This entry is part 13 of 14 in the series The Dark

I ran through the tunnels, following the sounds of your laughter as they bounced off the walls around me. The shape of the tunnels played tricks on my ears — every time I thought I was close to catching you, I turned a corner to find you were no longer there. You ran, with no sign of slowing, and so I ran too, trying to keep pace. Eventually the sounds of your laugh faded altogether.

I ran anyway, expecting at every turn to find you waiting. But you remained out of sight, somewhere ahead of me. How far I didn’t know, but I never gave up. I continued my chase, determined to keep you from walking these dark corridors alone, despite your seeming determination to do just that.

And then suddenly everything opened up into the largest room I had ever seen down here, and it immediately gave me vertigo. I had to put a hand to the wall to keep my balance or risk tumbling off my feet. The room ahead was full of pathways, above, below, to the sides, in an abstract nightmare that defied logic, sense, and physics.
