This entry is part 12 of 14 in the series The Dark

We moved lightly through the corridor, which eventually opened up in a larger space, pocked with deep pools of the evil liquid. We paused, scanning the room, then looked to each other. Without a word, we clasped hands.

We moved quickly but carefully across the room. You led the way, your nimble feet fairly dancing between the pools and across the narrow edges separating them. Our grip on each other gave us strength and balance, and we crossed the room without a single slip or stumble.

By the time we reached the opposite wall, we were both breathing heavily. The thrill of life coursed through us, connecting us, causing our skin to fairly vibrate with energy. We laughed, collapsing against each other in a kind of embrace. I felt your breath on my neck as you laughed, and my skin prickled in gooseflesh at the feel of it.

You pulled back, then, and kissed me, then danced off into the corridor, the echo of your laugh dopplering away. For a moment I was left in your wake, shocked, and then I chased after you.
