“Well, we won’t put together a landing party until the crew is recovered from hibernation, so three days at least. In the meantime, let’s go over the data we have.” Lindsey toggles her comm. “Zach, report.”
Zach Iverston is her chief science officer, and she can tell from his response that he is feeling every bit of the hibernation sickness that she is.
“Captain,” comes his reply. “Sorry, sir. I, uh, I’m still getting my bearings.” There is a pause on the comm, and Lindsey can almost hear her science officer taking several deep breaths to steady himself. It reminds her that she should probably do the same. After a moment, Zach comes back on the line.
“We don’t know much from the probe beacon. We are 100% certain that the asteroid contains a wormhole, and we are about 90% certain that it’s a world tunnel, based on the radio signals we periodically pick up originating from the wormhole’s location. We’ll know a lot more once we can send a landing party down. We’re about to deploy a battery of new probes that we can guide in closer to the wormhole to measure things like radiation, gravity, light, etc. We still don’t know why the asteroid itself is measuring with an unknown mass, but we think it must have something to do with the wormhole itself. Hopefully, I’ll have more information for you, Captain, in a few hours.”
