Where had she put her reading glasses? Had she put them into her pocket dimension without thinking and then forgotten about it?
She raised her left hand and waggled her fingers. A small portal no larger than a grapefruit opened up before her. It sparkled around the edges but appeared dark from within. She reached in — and pulled out a tiny alien.
“Nope,” she said almost absent-mindedly. She put the alien back and reached in again to pull out a packet of semi-smashed crackers.
“Nuts,” she grumbled. “Where are they?”
She put her hand in again — and got stuck.
“Boris!” she exclaimed. “Boris, you bad lizard. Let go of my hand!” There was a small chuff of acknowledgement that came from the portal, and she was able to pull her hand back again, albeit slightly damp.
She waggled her fingers again, and the portal opened up slightly larger. This time she reached in with her whole arm.
“Maybe they fell to the bottom,” she muttered to herself. She felt around the entire space of her pocket dimension — and finally produced the needed spectacles.
“There you are!” she said. She then deftly poised the glasses on the bridge of her nose and looked again at the portal to the pocket dimension. Very small tentacles were beginning to creep out from the opening. “Oh, no!” she said. “Back you go! Can’t have you wandering all around this reality.”
She gently pushed the tentacles back while waggling the fingers of her other hand. The portal closed up, sealing the pocket dimension away once more.
Now, on to reading the newspaper, she thought. And that is what she did.
